The existence and overall goal of the committee is to address the lack of understanding by police officers to the issues of environmental crime.

The committee is pursuing the following:

  • The possible inclusion of one hour of MLEOTC certified, mandated pre-service training on environmental crimes in the MLEOTC core curriculum. The possible reduction of HAZMAT training from four hours to three hours could accomplish this task.
  • The development and presentation of programs on environmental crimes at the MACP conferences.
  • The development of information for a police "card" or "flyer" on how to respond to the discovery of environmental crimes. This information (and more) may be inserted in a future dedicated issue of the "Michigan Police Chiefs Magazine" on environmental crime.
