2008 AWARD for EXCELLENCE in TRAFFIC SAFETY

The Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) is seeking applications for the 2008 Awards for Excellence in Traffic Safety.  The program is a competition among similar sizes and types of law enforcement agencies. It will recognize and reward the best overall traffic safety programs in the state.

Michigan’s program is compatible with the National Law Enforcement Challenge that is sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).  The state’s outstanding programs will be forwarded to the IACP to be included in the national competition.

The areas of concentration include efforts to enforce laws and educate the public about occupant protection, impaired driving, and speeding. Departments must submit an application that documents their agency's efforts and effectiveness in these areas. The winning safety programs are those that combine officer training, public information, and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries.

Up to $80,000 in grants will be awarded to be used for the purchase of equipment or overtime for traffic enforcement through the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP).   AAA Michigan will also present each finalist agency with a personalized plaque that recognizes the agency for its excellence in traffic safety.  These awards will be presented at the 2009 MACP winter training conference on February 5, 2009.

The MACP Traffic Safety Subcommittee will award grants to the top contender in each of the categories listed below, as well one each from a Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police.

Agency Size

1-10

11-15

16-25

26-49

50-80

81+

A panel of four judges will review each application and assign points based on established criteria. After the judging, the scores are averaged and a final score is assigned. After all of the applications are scored, the agencies are ranked in their categories. A minimum of 50 points MUST be earned to receive recognition and be eligible for an award.

Please review your department’s traffic safety activities for calendar year 2008 and submit your application now.  For more information, contact Tom Hendrickson at (517) 349-9420.
