MACP PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL

RETIRED CHIEF ERVIN L. PORTIS

The recipient of the 2008 Presidential Medal is a true “red and white” Nebraska Cornhusker. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Nebraska. Beginning his law enforcement career with the Lincoln (Nebraska) Police Department he held positions as police cadet, patrol officer, sergeant and lieutenant. From 1992 to 1996 he was the Chief of Police of the Papillion (Nebraska) Police Department. In 1996 Ervin Portis became Chief of Police of Jackson (Michigan) Police Department and he served in that capacity until his return to Nebraska in September 2007 when he became City Administrator for the City of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

Ervin Portis’s professional and community activities over the years are too numerous to mention but reflect the essence of the man: a person volunteering his time for the betterment of society. He has also received awards over the years from such diverse organizations at the Michigan Municipal League, the NAACP, the YMCA and the United Way.

As Chief of Police Erv Portis served on various MACP committees and the MACP Board of Director. He served as President during 2005 – 2006. Perhaps he is most remembered for his 10 years of service on the MACP Legislative Committee and his untiring efforts as Chairman to promote our legislative positions in the halls of our state capitol.

Citing the criteria of the Presidential Medal “the recipient’s activities shall be of such significance as to demonstrate a personal dedication and commitment above and beyond normal professional duties and interactions.” This statement truly speaks to the man honored for both his professional achievements and his service to the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.
